i-Dance Festival (HK) 2019

i-Dance Festival (HK) was first organised by a group of independent contemporary dance artists in 2004. Taiwan, South Korea and Japan have also founded their own i-Dance Festivals in 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively, forming an i-Dance Festival network in Asia. This year’s i-Dance Festival (HK) 2019 is small in scale due to lack of resources but still we hope to create a dance festival with Hong Kong identity. We hope to dance out the voice of Hong Kong ……!

i-Dance Festival (HK) 2016 i-Dance Festival (HK) 2017
A Dance Festival of Hong Kong
Y-Space

Y-Space was founded in 1995 by Victor Choi-wo Ma and Mandy Ming-yin Yim in Hong Kong, with the mission of exploring the infinite possibilities of dance, and searching for new dance idioms and new artistic directions.

Y-Space has been invited by international arts festivals and arts organizations to perform and conduct artistic exchange. To date, its Improvisation Land series has reached its 42nd series, while its Dancing All Around series has gone beyond the 10th mark. Since 2009, Y-Space has been hosting the i-Dance HK festival.

Now in its 18th year, Y-Space has become an important arts group on the Hong Kong contemporary dance through creating new work, promoting dance and providing training, education and research work through activities conducted at community level and at the Y-Space Dance Studio.

Improvisation Land

Since 1998, Y-Space created a platform named “Improvisation Land” for artists of different media to meet and have an improvisational jamming from time to time. Improvisation Land gathers artists around the world, and across the areas of dance, installation art, music, lighting design and visual art. Breaking away from the structured, rehearsed performance mode, these artists interact spontaneously; responding to new situations from moment to moment, digging deep to manifest their freshest creative impulse, choreograph instantly at the moment of the moment. Being unpredictable could be risky, but could also bring surprise and delight. Improvisation Land had already created more then 70 series with more then 90 performances since 1988.

Dance 4: What We Need is Here
This piece is a new improvised work that is informed by Aiken and Hauser's curiosity about the dynamics of perception, action, and the poetic imagination. How do we use our senses to be in touch with ourselves, others and our surroundings? How can our imagination deepen and connect us with the world and ourselves.
We are interested in how dance-making can support a return to sustainable ways of living. The title of this piece is borrowed from the poem "What We Need is Here" by Wendall Berry, where he says, "...we pray, not for new earth or heaven, but to be quiet in heart, and in eye, clear. What we need is here."

David KA- NANG LEUNG

Dancer

Born and raised in Hong Kong. Began practicing dance by serendipity at the age of 19; for the past twenty-odd years my passion is contact improvisation. Came into contact with the study of butoh in recent years. Uses somatic movement practices as the backbone for my research and teaching. Received formal training in dance in the USA and HK; a graduate from CUHK and HKAPA. Teaches for the School of Dance and previous for the School of Drama of the HKAPA, as well as for the medical humanities program co-organized by the Absolutely Fabulous Theatre Connection and the School of Medicine of HKU. From time to time, I travel to different countries and regions to create, teach, perform and translate. In my dance career, I continuously encounter the dichotomies in life: happiness/sadness, goodness/badness, beauty/ugliness, authenticity/hypocrisy. The most important thing is that I still choose to love life, dance, art, creativity and teaching. Creativity from the heart will attract the best audience, just as a flower in full bloom will bathe in the breeze. Gladly I share with you all.
