edwin_tI am a 43-year-old Dutch guy who, by accident, starts to work as a light designer. Before working in the theatre I did all kind of jobs. I have been always interested in art in a bigger sense, not only in theatre. I started to get curious in lighting design when I had my first job in theatre as a technician in a small space in Rotterdam. Outside of my job I slowly developed my hobby. I became well in acquainted with the theatre techniques, especially that of lighting. That was where my creative energy was being directed.

After a few years working in small theatres I moved to main town theatres, where I further developed my technical knowledge and skills. This has helped me continuously expand my lighting design expertise and experience. I have increasingly got in contact with small creative companies such as Hotel Modern, Waterhuis, Gato Bizar, Panama Pictures, Monk, etc., and I have been working for and touring with their productions.

During my 20 years of working in theatre my field has focused on dance, which provides me with more space to use light in an expressive way. I have worked with different Dutch, Flemish, and Chinese dance and theatre companies, including 2move Dance Company, Panama Pictures, Conny Janssen danst, Internationaal Danstheater, Isabelle Bernaert, Guangdong Modern Dance Company, and the Living Dance Studio. Currently I am also teaching and working with students at Codarts University for the Arts in Rotterdam, and supporting new theatre and dance creators at Dansateliers Rotterdam—a contemporary dance incubator.
